Grow Your Own Vegetables
Eating vegetables is of course inherently good for you, however, growing your own is even better. Sowing vegetables from seed is such a great activity for all ages to get involved in.
For those impatient gardeners, lettuce can be a great place to start as it can tolerate the lower temperatures associated with early spring, but it is a fast grower too! If you’re looking for something with a little more substance, carrots are a great option, taking up relatively little space and can even be grown in containers. Ensure they’re planted in an area of full sun, with well-drained soil and you can harvest nearly all year round.
From avid gardeners to first-timers and children who are looking to explore new activities, watching seedlings grow is incredibly gratifying. It’s budget- and environmentally friendly too, allowing you to enjoy the proceeds of your homegrown labours.
When is the best time to start sowing vegetable seeds? Often seed packets will give you a good overview of when the best time to sow and harvest your crop is but often, if you want to start at the early end of the scale, growing indoors is the best place to start. Head on over to our Leckford Estate garden shop for everything you need to get started from pots and seeds to labels and propagators.
Pruning Your Garden
Spring can often be one of the busiest times of year for gardeners as temperatures increase, plants grow at an increased rate and there’s always plenty of pruning to be done. Plants such as lavender, buddleias and fuchsias are best to prune in the spring to help encourage more flowers and growth over the warmer months.
Why not head over to your local plant nursery at the Leckford Estate where our team will be happy to suggest a selection of plants to incorporate into your own haven and also provide expert knowledge on how to look after your existing plants.
